The greeting expressed in the closing of the palms at the chest is an ancient Burmese tradition, still pre-Buddhist. It has undergone a lot of changes and now exists in a number of variations across the continent. Thai greeting Wai only seems simple, in fact it is a complex and diverse ritual.
What is Thai greeting wai?

Wai is the traditional greeting in Thailand. Since Thai society has strong religious and cultural traditions, even greeting it becomes a special ritual. The greeting in Thai is a special bow with arms folded in front of you at chest level. Wai is used not only as a greeting, but also in expressing gratitude and respect.
Thais are taught to do wai from about the age of two. The skills of this ritual are honed over the years to make everything beautiful, dignified and in accordance with the situation. Therefore, immediately repeat the wai correctly and in full is simply impossible.
What wai will be depends on a lot - on the age, social status of the person to greet. Other criteria are the involvement of a person in the royal family or monasticism. These two steps are the highest. Wai is an unspoken act of respecting interlocutors related to the traditions of society in Thailand. This is not a European handshake or a kiss on the cheek - wai shows your attitude towards the other person, your attention to him.
When and to whom do wai?

Of course, handing out Wai to the right and left, but several times — taxi drivers, waiters, and other support staff — is not worth it. But when you have been rendered a service or you have made a good bargain, you need to think about how to show your respect. It is reasonable not to try to repeat the ritual completely, but simply treat others and the cult with respect. Enough smiles and nod head. It is quite European and generally polite.
It is considered impolite not to respond to wai. This is allowed only to members of the royal family and monks. Well, and, of course, tourists who are not familiar with the rules. But it is better to answer the wai that you did. When you decide to make a wai yourself, try to roughly estimate the social status and age of the person to whom your Thai greeting is intended.

How to do wai?

If a person is superior to you in social status, then hands should be folded with your fingertips at the nose level and slightly bowed down the body. If you want to express great respect or gratitude, fold your fingertips at the level of your mouth and make a deep and long bow. For monks and persons close to the King, you need to make your thumbs around the nose. For the King and Buddha, you need to keep them near the forehead. The intensity of the bow goes on increasing, but do not overdo it.
The first wai always makes the youngest. He accompanies him with a slight nod of his head. The reciprocal wai senior person should do no higher than chest level. For the eldest, there is rap wai. If a very old man or a monk nods his head or raises his right hand, it means he received your greeting. And finally, remember - those who ask for alms do above the forehead. So do not lift your hands. But the best wai you learn to do if the Thais themselves teach you that.
